Pinay student Diana Lemos, one of best gift wrappers in US

As a little girl growing up in San Pedro, Rizal, Diana Lemos always had a fondness for the way Christmas gifts were wrapped.

“Mayroon mga gift wrapping booths doon sa shopping mall so ang gagawin lang namin ng father ko tatayo lang kami at manonood ako ng professional gift wrappers kung paano sila mag wrap,” the 26-year-old medical student recalled.

Her fondness became a hobby. She even put up her own website to share her passion for gift wrapping.

When she found out that tape company Scotch was holding a competition for gift wrapping,  Lemos immediately sent an entry.

Lemos was chosen as one of the contestants, and Scotch flew her to New York to compete against 7 other gift wrappers.

Contestants had to wrap big, awkwardly-shaped items like slides, wagons, and gumball machines as artistically and as quickly as they could in front of an audience.

“It’s very challenging kasi kung ako mag-wrap, I gift wrap for fun. I find it very relaxing so I take time doing it," she explained.

Lemos did better than she expected, finishing second place behind Rosie Sato of Orange County, California.

Aside from her all-expense-paid trip to New York City, Lemos won $2,500 cash and a supply of Scotch products.

Gift-wrapping may be a hobby, but Lemos believes her talent, which requires speed, precision and skillful hands, will be useful for her future career as a trauma surgeon.
